The Critical Care Research Program was co-founded by Dr. Jennifer Tsang and Dr. Erick Duan in 2017 with one multicentre clinical trial (PROSPECT Trial) and one half-time Research Coordinator. Within 6 years, our program has grown to include a total of four Physician Co-Leads (Dr. Jennifer Tsang, Dr. Erick Duan, Dr. Han-Oh Chung and Dr. Natasha Ovtcharenko), one senior Research Coordinator (Lisa Patterson) and two Research Assistants (Diane Nielsen-Smith and Aarthy Ehaparaseelan). Since the inception of the Critical Care Research Program, 22 clinical trials/observational studies were completed and 1,845 patients were enrolled in total. The Critical Care Research Program conduct multicentre (Canadian and multinational) clinical trials/observational studies in the areas of COVID-19, sepsis, pneumonia, diabetes, acute respiratory distress syndrome, mechanical ventilation and translational biology. Currently, we are conducting 11 active clinical trials/observational studies and 3 new clinical trials underway.
The Critical Care Research Program received Leading Practice Designation by Health Standards Organization in 2021 and was ranked third in Canada by the Canadian Clinical Research Network in patient enrollment in research studies. The Critical Care Research Program contributes to many practice changing and high impact research publications.
