Respecting Privacy: Our Policy on Recording in the Hospital

At Niagara Health, we are committed to protecting the privacy and dignity of everyone in our care. To ensure a safe and respectful environment for patients, families, staff, physicians and volunteers, audio, video and photo recording is strictly prohibited within our hospitals without prior written consent.

Why This Policy Matters

With smartphones and cameras readily available, it’s easier than ever to capture and share moments instantly. However, hospitals are places of healing, and patient privacy is protected by law. Unauthorized recording can compromise the confidentiality and comfort of those receiving care, as well as the professionals dedicated to providing it.

This policy is in place to:

  • Respect Privacy – Patients, staff and visitors deserve to feel safe without fear of being recorded.
  • Protect Confidentiality – Health information and personal moments should remain private.
  • Ensure a Healing Environment – Hospitals should be spaces of trust, where people focus on care and recovery.

Social Media and Privacy

We strictly prohibit the posting of any photos, videos or audio recordings of patients, staff, physicians, families or volunteers on social media. Sharing such content without permission is a serious breach of privacy and trust. When this policy is violated, we will take appropriate action, including reporting the breach to the social media platform and, if necessary, pursuing further measures to protect those affected.

Need to Record? Here’s What to Do

If there is a valid reason to take photos, videos or audio recordings in the hospital, written permission must be obtained in advance. For more information or to request consent, please contact corporate.communications@niagarahealth.on.ca

Thank you for helping us create a respectful and private environment for all.
