Thanks to the exceptional work of our teams and partners, Niagara Health has experienced minimal disruption to patient care following a significant water main break and flooding at the Niagara Falls Hospital on Saturday. Staff, physicians, facilities and environmental services teams acted quickly and effectively, supported by Niagara EMS and the City of Niagara Falls, to contain the situation and maintain safe operations across the hospital.
While a small number of patients were moved within the hospital and some surgical procedures were relocated, emergency care remained available for all walk-in patients, and overall impact to patients was limited. Ambulances were briefly redirected to the Marotta Family Hospital, but we are once again accepting all ambulance arrivals. Stroke services remain fully operational at the site. Outpatient surgical procedures scheduled for this week are going ahead as planned.
Remediation efforts are ongoing, and the cause of the water main break is currently under investigation.
We are incredibly proud of our teams across all areas of the hospital for their professionalism, dedication, and quick action in response to this unexpected event. Everyone came together to ensure patients continued to receive safe, high-quality care.
At the Welland Hospital, where a separate flooding incident occurred earlier this summer, remediation is progressing and repairs are underway in several affected areas, including the operating rooms. The ORs are expected to be back up and running by the end of July.
These recent events are a reminder of the challenges that come with aging infrastructure. With the opening of the new South Niagara Hospital on the horizon, we look forward to another modern, state-of-the-art facility that will significantly reduce the risk of lifecycle issues like these in the future.
We will continue to share updates as work progresses.
