Take Five with Dr. Leonard

Posted Aug 12th, 2024

For Dr. Blair Leonard, hematologist and lead singer of the band Down The Fire, music serves as a powerful tool for stress management and rejuvenation.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, Dr. Blair Leonard has found a unique way to hit all the right notes.

“I believe finding a balance between work and personal interests is essential to overall well-being,” says the Niagara Health hematologist.

During the day, Dr. Leonard cares for patients in Niagara Health’s Thrombosis clinic, lending his expertise to thrombo prophylaxis, bridging and anti-coagulation management and providing education to patients with, or at risk for blood clots.

In the evenings, Dr. Leonard trades his stethoscope for a microphone and takes centre stage as the lead singer of ‘Down The Fire’, a rock band comprised of local physicians from Hamilton and Niagara.

“It all started as a way to jam out and have some fun after long shifts,” says Dr. Leonard. “We just got to talking about our love for music. Little did we know that our passion project would turn into something more.”

Down The Fire, which started in 2013, has played countless shows across the Greater Toronto Area, raising over $100,000 for various organizations supporting prostate cancer, refugee health and more.

Dr. Leonard’s journey into medicine began with a steadfast commitment to empathy and a strong desire to make an impact, traits that have seamlessly integrated into his musical endeavors.

“I’ve always believed in the power of connection,” he says. “Whether it’s through supporting patients in my practice or sharing a song that resonates with the crowd.”

Dr. Leonard reflects on his ability to harmonize his roles as both a musician and physician at Niagara Health.

How did your journey into hematology begin?

The study and practice of medicine has always been a passion. I found hematology particularly compelling because of its direct impact on patients’ lives. I knew I wanted to focus on a specialty where I could make a difference both clinically and through research. In 2012, I was given an opportunity to practice in Niagara and launch Niagara Health’s first Thrombosis Service, which brought much needed care closer to home for many Niagara residents. Today, the clinic sees approximately 5,000 patients per year, emphasizing the need for the delivery of high-quality thrombosis care.

Balancing a career as a physician with musical pursuits must have its challenges. How do you approach this balance?

Integrating both my medical career and love for music has been incredibly rewarding. Balancing these two aspects of my life requires careful time management and dedication. I’ve learned to set clear boundaries and prioritize effectively. My medical duties come first, ensuring I deliver the best care to my patients. Outside of work, my work with the band allows me to unwind and express creativity. This balance enriches my life and keeps me grounded in both worlds.

How does your passion for music influence your professional career?

Beyond being a creative outlet, music has a profound impact on my ability to deliver the best patient care possible. Physicians often struggle with achieving work-life balance due to the demanding nature of our profession, however Niagara Health emphasizes the importance of this balance and recognizes that a healthy, balanced physician is better equipped to deliver compassionate and effective patient care. Music serves as a powerful tool for stress management and rejuvenation. After a long day, music allows me to unwind, clean my mind and recharge. This, in turn, helps me to return to work the next day with renewed energy and focus, ready to provide and deliver high-quality care to the patients we serve every day.
