Community involvement sought in selecting Indigenous art for Outpatient Mental Health Units

Posted Aug 12th, 2024

As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting a culturally safe environment for patients, Niagara Health recently completed an Indigenous art callout, inviting artists to apply for three commissions to create art pieces to be displayed in our Outpatient Mental Health Units in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland.

We are pleased to have received nine art submissions from Indigenous artists across Niagara, each thoughtfully representing the communities we serve and embodying the concept of ‘two-eyed seeing’ – acknowledging traditional Indigenous and western healing methods.

We recognize the significance of engaging the community in the selection of these meaningful art pieces and invite community members to participate in the selection process by selecting the art designs they would like to see at each of our three hospitals.

Community feedback and preferences will play a significant role in determining the final selection of art pieces for display. To view all the artwork proposals and submit your vote, please visit the Niagara Health website. Community selection will be open until Aug. 30, 2024.

We are deeply grateful to the talented Indigenous artists who contributed their creativity and vision to this initiative.

The three successful artists will be announced in September and the Indigenous artworks will be unveiled in late 2024.
