Niagara Health’s RAAM walk-in clinics improving timely access to care

Posted Jul 10th, 2024

Individuals seeking assistance for substance use disorders now have increased access to timely support in addressing their addiction-related needs.

Effective immediately, Niagara Health’s Rapid Access Addiction Medicine Clinics (RAAM) are moving to a walk-in clinic model and expanding access to include three new locations for individuals to access support for alcohol or substance use.

“We are proud to introduce these enhanced services, which underscores our commitment to improving accessible and efficient healthcare solutions for individuals struggling with substance use disorders,” says Laura Farelly, Director, Mental Health and Addictions. “The walk-in model will significantly improve our ability to meet the needs of community members seeking addiction support.”

The RAAM clinic provides rapid access and care for people seeking help with any substance or alcohol use. The clinical team provide assessment, counselling, medications and helps to connect people to resources in the community or at Niagara Health.

The RAAM clinical team includes doctors, nurse practitioners, social workers, addiction counsellors and peer support workers who have training and experience treating people who are struggling with substance use problems.

People with substance use disorders often struggle with multiple health and social challenges, which can make it difficult for them to keep appointments and cope with long wait times for care.

“The walk-in model gives patients the flexibility to access care when they are able to, without the pressure of having to make and keep a scheduled appointment,” Farrelly says. “RAAM clinics are meant to provide low-barrier, rapid access to substance-use care and this change will help us do that.”

By expanding access to additional locations, individuals across our community can more easily access the care they need. Walk-in clinics are available at the following locations with virtual appointments also available through Community Addiction Services of Niagara (CASON).

Marotta Family Hospital – Outpatient Walk-in Clinic: Thursdays 9 to 11 a.m.
