Niagara Health is excited to announce that Dr. Michael Levesque has been appointed Chief of Oncology.
Dr. Levesque, an Oncologist with Niagara Health since 2008, will assume the role effective Nov. 1, replacing Dr. Janice Giesbrecht, who is completing her second term in the position.
“Dr. Levesque is a highly respected physician in Niagara and we are thrilled to have him take on this important leadership position at our Walker Family Cancer Centre,” says Dr. Johan Viljoen, Niagara Health’s Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President Medical. “Dr. Levesque will be instrumental in helping us continue to grow our Oncology Program, which provides high-quality care to the people we serve.”
Dr. Levesque, a Niagara resident, has held numerous leadership positions at Niagara Health, including most recently as Medical Head of Systemic Therapy, Gynecologic Oncology Site Lead and Genitourinary Cancers Site Lead.
He is a member of Cancer Care Ontario’s Regional Quality Safety Network and Systemic Treatment Program Steering Committee. Dr. Levesque is also an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Oncology at McMaster University.
We are extremely grateful to Dr. Giesbrecht for her strong leadership and vision as Chief of Oncology. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Giesbrecht helped to lead the opening of our Walker Family Cancer Centre in 2013, which brought care closer to home for thousands of Niagara residents with the introduction of new services and programs.
Dr. Giesbrecht, who will continue as an Oncologist at Niagara Health, has also been a champion in raising awareness in the community about the incredible work happening at our cancer centre and has been actively involved with important fundraising events like the Big Move Cancer Ride and Rankin Cancer Run.
