When Jane Thomas walked up to the front door of the Extended Care Unit at our Welland Site, her wedding song, When a Man Loves a Woman, was playing on a speaker outside.
Waiting for her outside the front door were flowers, a cupcake, 50th anniversary balloons and a sign that read, Herb loves Jane.
On the other side of the glass door was her husband, Herb, looking dapper in a bow tie.
Knowing Jane could not come inside because of our no-visitors policy, the Recreation Therapy team at the long-term care home wanted to plan something special for the couple’s golden anniversary.
Jane and Herb, who met on a blind date and were married on May 2, 1970, have two adult children and three grandchildren.
“It was emotional and it was touching,” their daughter Tina Giudice says of the window visit. “My mom kept saying, 'I wish I could give him a hug and a kiss.’ She misses him so much.”
The family is planning to have another celebration when we are able to welcome visitors inside again.
