Niagara Health today declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on Unit D, an inpatient unit at the Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls.
This outbreak follows an outbreak declared yesterday on the site’s Trillium Unit. A total of 13 patients and four staff from the Trillium Unit and Unit D tested positive for COVID-19.
“This is a very unfortunate situation. We’re working to our fullest capacity to prevent further spread of this virus and protect the health and wellbeing of our patients, staff and physicians,” says Derek McNally, Executive Vice President Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive. “This includes testing additional patients and staff on Unit D and conducting contact tracing to confirm the path of transmission of the virus.”
Our Infection Prevention and Control team is monitoring the situation very closely.
Enhanced precautions are in place to prevent and control the spread of this highly contagious virus and include caring for the affected patients in one area, heightened cleaning and education about appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
The Trillium Unit outbreak was declared as a result of a health-care associated case (transmission in the hospital).
Further contact tracing led to the identification of additional positive cases of patients on Unit D and the declaration of today’s outbreak.
