The spirit of compassion and community so reflective of the holiday season are illustrated in this year’s selection in the eighth annual Niagara Health System Holiday Card Contest for kids. This year’s competition had a total of 51 inspirational and creative entries.
Josh Clare has been selected as the artist of the 2014 NHS holiday greeting card. Josh is the 10-year-old son of Adrienne Clare, an Administrative Assistant in the Clinical Teaching Unit at the St. Catharines Site. Josh, who is a Grade 5 student at St. Elizabeth School in Wainfleet, says his drawing reflects that “Christmas is a time for taking care of other people not just yourself. The snowman helping the injured Santa inspires helping and caring for others.”
In November, all children and grandchildren aged 12 or under of NHS staff, physicians and volunteers were invited to participate in an artwork contest giving them the chance to be selected as the acclaimed artist of the card. NHS President Dr. Suzanne Johnston and Executive Vice-President Derek McNally had the challenging task of selecting the winners from a wide variety of unique and talented entries.
Dr. Johnston said: “Judging the artwork was enjoyable but difficult because there were so many great entries. We were impressed by the way Josh illustrated the Niagara Health System’s values of caring and compassion, as well as the care and detail reflected in his drawing.”
As the winning entry, Josh’s artwork will be used in the NHS electronic holiday greeting that will be distributed to community members and partner organizations throughout the region and province.
Winners in each of the three age categories were also selected, in addition to the “your favourite” category where staff, physicians and volunteers voted for their favourite artwork. The winners are:
- Ages 3-5 – Aydan Rose McCulloch
- Ages 6-8 – Madelyn Digweed
- Ages 9-12 – Ann Sony
- Your Favourite (as voted by NHS staff, physicians & volunteers) - Amye Buchan
