The Canadian Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (CASPR) held its Annual Awards ceremony during their 8th Annual Conference.
Sheila MacLean, Physician Recruitment Coordinator with the Department of Health & Wellness, Province of Prince Edward Island, was the recipient of the 2012/13 CASPR Recruiter Recognition Award. The CASPR Recruiter Recognition Award recognizes a CASPR member who has been selected by his or her peers as an icon who has developed innovative and collaborative approaches and solutions resulting in successful physician attraction and retention in their community.
Ms. MacLean has been in the Physician Recruitment Coordinator role for the past seven years and has been a member of CASPR for six years. She demonstrates the innovative characteristics, passion and commitment to her role inherent to the Recruiter Recognition Award’s criteria. Her efforts have effectively resulted in the success achieved in the recruitment and retention efforts for family physicians and specialists to the province of Prince Edward Island. Ms. MacLean has recruited over 140 physicians and their families since 2007, 53 of whom are internationally trained. She has been instrumental in bringing together partners in the province to develop a toolkit for internationally educated health professionals. She looks forward to hosting the 2014 conference in Prince Edward Island.
Joan Hatcher, Medical Affairs Manager for Niagara Health System, was the recipient of the inaugural CASPR Leadership Award. The CASPR Leadership Award recognizes a CASPR member who has demonstrated significant leadership within the association and the physician recruitment industry. Ms. Hatcher has significantly contributed to the development, evolution, and growth of the association. CASPR was Ms. Hatcher’s dream. Without the leadership of Ms. Hatcher, CASPR would not exist as it does today. She was also integral to the creation and development of the CASPR Fellowship Certification Program.
Ms. Hatcher is responsible for the recruitment of Specialist Physicians for the Niagara Health System, acts as Liaison between the Niagara Health System and the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, Niagara Campus and manages the Continuing Medical Education program. Ms. Hatcher was a member of the Board, as well as Chair of the Niagara Rehabilitation Centre from 1994 – 2000. She was a founding member of the Executive of the Niagara Health System until assuming the role of Specialist Physician Recruiter for the Niagara Health System in 2001. Ms. Hatcher is currently an Assessor of Independent Health Facilities, a member of the Radiology Task Force and the IHF Review Panel for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Ms. Hatcher was the founding Chair of CASPR and works to promote in-house Physician recruitment across Canada. Ms. Hatcher is also the first Canadian physician recruiter to obtain the Fellowship of the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (CASPR’s sister organization in the United States).

The awards were presented at the 8th CASPR Annual Conference held in Ottawa, Ontario which attracted 85 recruiters from across the country.
The Canadian Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (CASPR) is a professional organization from across Canada whose members primary role is to recruit physicians for their communities, local hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Membership is open to non-profit Physician Recruiters employed or retained by hospitals, hospital corporations, clinics, health care regions or authorities, public sector, government agencies or communities to recruit and retain physicians for that entity. CASPR’s membership has been increasing with each passing year and currently has approximately 150 recruiters. CASPR offers a means for Canadian Physician Recruiters from coast to coast to share best practices, techniques and tools for physician recruitment and retention.
