Niagara-on-the-Lake has a rich history, and once again the Town has the opportunity to celebrate its heritage with a 90th Birthday Party hosted by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Auxiliary. This celebration is part of the Recollections Project, an initiative to gather and publish stories of our Hospital volunteers, funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
The celebration will be held on Saturday, September 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the grounds of the Hospital, located at 176 Wellington St. (map). Parking and admission are free. The Auxiliary has planned a fun-filled event for the entire family. There will be free birthday cake, a tea party reminiscent of the 1920s, entertainment, children’s activities, along with food and refreshments. As well, there will be health seminars conducted by health professionals on topics of interest to many residents.
The Recollections Book will be launched at the event. It represents a year of research to document the contributions of the Hospital Auxiliary and ensure they are remembered by future generations. The book is full of stories that help us understand what life was like as a volunteer in the earlier years of the Hospital. Featured are stories from two long-service Auxilians: Helen Dawson, a member for 61 years, and Vera Derbyshire, a member for 60 years. The book is written as a tribute to the important role volunteers have played in our community over the past 90 years.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Auxiliary is a non-profit organization that provides a range of services in support of healthcare in our community including direct patient services, fundraising for the NOTL Hospital Site, supporting the community foot care clinic and Life Line services, and providing annual scholarships to paramedic students at Niagara College.
The Auxiliary would like to thank the following companies for their support of this important event: Carruthers Printing, Cow’s, Niagara Patient Transfer Service, the Pumphouse, Willow Cakes & Pastries, M&M Meats and Meridian Credit Union.
Please come out and join us as we celebrate our Town and its dedicated volunteers!
