Retirement Announcement

Dr. Johan Viljoen has retired from his position as Chief of Staff and Executive Vice-President, Medical Affairs.  

Dr. Viljoen has made significant contributions to Niagara Health over the past 30 years as an obstetrician and gynecologist, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Chief of Staff and Executive Vice-President, Medical Affairs. 

“As a member of the executive team, Johan contributed to shaping our strategic priorities, led our team of physicians through the pandemic and represented Niagara Health on numerous regional committees. He also served as a vocal champion for Niagara residents and patients,” says Marylee O’Neill, Chair, Niagara Health Board of Directors. “We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to a great leader, colleague and mentor.”  

Dr. Viljoen first joined Niagara Health as a physician in 1993. Among his many contributions to his patients and the residents of Niagara, he led the transformation of the delivery of Obstetrics and Gynecology services in the region. He built s​trong and productive relationships, and enhanced the quality of care for patients and families. He’s recognized across the community of Niagara and beyond for his commitment to innovation and patient centred healthcare. 

An Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University, Dr. Viljoen led academic, clinical and research collaborations with the Niagara Regional Campus. He has contributed to the success of many innovative initiatives such as the implementation of Seamless Care Optimizing the Patient Experience (SCOPE) and the creation of the Niagara Health Knowledge Institute. 

Dr. Satish Chawla, Chief of Laboratory Medicine since 2018, will serve as interim Chief of Staff and Executive Vice-President, Medical Affairs.  A pathologist with Niagara Health since 2005, Dr. Chawla has practiced medicine for more than 30 years. With extensive leadership experience, he served as President of the Niagara Health Medical Association from 2013 to 2016, and is a member of Niagara Health’s Credentialing Committee.  

To position Niagara Health for success, a governance review is currently underway to inform next steps in the recruitment process.
