Recipients of Nursing Awards of Excellence announced

Niagara, Ontario: Nine Nursing Awards of Excellence were given out this morning as members of the profession gathered to be honoured at the Niagara Health System’s annual Nursing Week breakfast.

“I would like to congratulate all of our award winners and nominees this year,” says Sue Matthews, Chief Nursing Executive. “It was very moving to read what the nurses submitted about their peers. The nominations demonstrate the level of respect they have for each other and the impact they have on patients’ lives. All of our nurses are truly professionals who are committed to their patients and to providing compassionate, high quality patient care.”

The following Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses are this year’s recipients of nursing awards:

Nursing Award for Excellence in Direct Care 

  • Brigette O’Connor, RN, Greater Niagara General Site
  • Cindy Duckett, RN, Ontario Street Site
  • Brenda Breton, RN, Port Colborne Site
  • Edna Fohkens, RPN, St. Catharines General Site
  • Cindy Banner, RPN, Welland Site
  • Susan Gagne, RN, Corporate Support

Baxter Corp. Education Awards – One RN and one RPN selected to receive $500 each to further their education:

  • Brigette O’Connor, RN, Greater Niagara General Site
  • Edna Fohkens, RPN, St. Catharines General Site

Nursing Leadership Award – One Clinical Manager selected

  • Heather Paterson, Clinical Manager, Greater Niagara General Site

“Our nurses are at the front line of patient care every day, and we value the important contributions that they make,” says President and CEO Debbie Sevenpifer. “I would like to congratulate this year’s nominees for being chosen by their peers for these awards. Their accomplishments are impressive, and I am very proud of them. Their compassion, professionalism and respect speak volumes about their commitment to quality patient care.”

National Nursing Week is a celebration of the dedication of nurses. The NHS holds a variety of recognition events for its 1,800 Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses during the week, including a Nursing Breakfast, Nursing Dinner on May 12, Celebration Teas at each of the seven sites, and Nursing Excellence Awards.
