Official Statement to News Media

Posted Mar 2nd, 2010

Earlier today, Dr. Andrew McCallum, Chief Coroner for Ontario, announced that an inquest will be held into the death of 18-year-old Reilly Anzovino who died on December 27, 2009, from injuries she sustained as the result of an automobile accident. On behalf of the Niagara Health System (NHS), we continue to express our condolences and support to the family and friends of Miss Anzovino.

The NHS is required to report such deaths to the Coroner’s office and did so in this case. The hospital respects the Chief Coroner’s decision and will continue to fully cooperate with the Coroner’s Office to ensure that Miss Anzovino’s death is fully investigated and all of the facts come to light.

At this time, the hospital cannot discuss any specific information regarding the care provided to Miss Anzovino as it does not have consent from the family to share this information. We trust that the inquest process will fully investigate the death and through that process questions regarding the care provided to Miss Anzovino by the hospital will be answered.

The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario stated earlier today that the scope and focus of the inquest will be determined by the presiding Coroner following the completion of the investigation into the circumstances of Miss Anzovino’s death. As part of the inquest proceedings, the Coroner’s jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. Details regarding the date, location and presiding Coroner have not yet been determined, and the hospital looks forward to learning more about the intended scope of the inquest once that information is available.
