Niagara Health System celebrates our volunteers

Posted Apr 7th, 2016

Niagara Health System is celebrating our more than 850 dedicated, passionate and hard-working volunteers and auxilians as part of National Volunteer Week April 10-16.

Our volunteers help provide quality patient-centered care in a wide range of departments, including Cardiac Rehab, Critical Care, Emergency Department, Medical Imaging, Mental Health, Outpatient Clinics, Palliative Care, Surgical Services, the Walker Family Cancer Centre and Women’s and Babies. Volunteers also support the important work of OneFoundation for Niagara Health System and our auxiliaries by raising money for equipment through Gift Shops, lottery ticket sales and other resource-generating ventures.

“The hospital volunteers and auxilians truly understand that it is the everyday little things that make a difference to our patients’ and their loved ones’ experience with the NHS,” says Natalee Little, Coordinator of Volunteer Resources. “Something as simple as taking a patient to the department that they need to go rather than providing them with directions truly enhances our patients’ experience.”

Making a difference seems to make NHS volunteers happy. In a 2015 satisfaction survey, 98% said they would recommend volunteering at NHS to their family and friends. As well, 96% of volunteers surveyed felt their volunteer work helps make the hospital a better place.

“We couldn’t provide high-quality care without the vitally important contributions that our volunteers make as valued members of our team,” says NHS President Dr. Suzanne Johnston. “We are so grateful for their commitment to healthcare.”
