Dr. George Beiko receives significant honour

Posted Dec 15th, 2014

Niagara Health System is pleased to congratulate St. Catharines ophthalmologist Dr. George Beiko on a significant honour he recently received from the Danish Ophthalmological Society.

In November, the society named Dr. Beiko as the 2014 Jørn Boberg-Ans Memorial Lecturer.

As part of the honour, Dr. Beiko, who has a practice in St. Catharines and also performs surgery at the NHS Ophthalmology Program at the Welland Site, travelled to Copenhagen, Denmark to deliver a lecture for the Danish Ophthalmological Society. The annual lecturer is chosen for his or her highly valuable contribution to contemporary surgery in the anterior segment.

Dr. Beiko, who is also an assistant clinical professor at McMaster University, was selected for his research in IOL designs and his academic, critical attitude to femtosecond laser cataract surgery. He is the first North American to receive the honour.

In a kind gesture, Dr. Beiko forwarded the $5,000 US that came with the honour to support two Danish residents to attend and present their scientific work at a major international meeting next year.

Dr. Boberg-Ans, for whom the award is named, was a Danish pioneer in the development of modern anterior segment surgery in the 1960s and 1970s; cataract extraction with IOL implantation as well as adding microsurgical techniques to keratoplasty.
